At the Museum of Communism

by the Night Writer

Museum of CommunismI saw this museum advertised the first day we were in Prague and made a note to see it while we were here. I loved the poster, for one thing. It came down to our last weekend and I realized we still needed to go, so we set out. I have to say it is one of the most affecting places I’ve visited over here.

The Czechs are not known for their sense of humor, but it can be found, such as their placing this museum in the same building as a McDonald’s, next to a casino, and across the street from Benetton. There are also some rather rude jokes at the expense of the Russians and Communism in the gift shop, but the museum itself is serious. One might even say, “deadly serious.”

I could write in greater detail about my impressions, but perhaps it’s better to let the people who lived through it do it in their way. I took photos of some of the English-language placards that accompanied the photos and displays. These are also available in French, German, Czech, and several other languages for greater edification. Let’s let them tell the story.

text

“…authorized to issue temporary decrees enforcing laws without any approval of the parliament…” hmmm?

text

Targeting opponents with heinous accusations and show trials, and extravagant media campaigns.

text

A “shock-workers” movement to push laborers to maximum effort, and trade unions declaring that “after the victory of socialism, laborer’s wages would not be important.”

text

Supply and Demand? Why, there ought to be a law…

text

Those in power always find a way to get their luxury goods. Or their groceries.

text

There are no spiritual values, outside the State. There is no beauty, but what serves the State. There is no eternity…but the State. Rape, pillage and pollute the land and consequently the people; it doesn’t matter as long as the State benefits.

text

A well-regulated militia?

text

You can’t find a more “well-regulated” militia than that: armed groups established by the government as “the fist of the labor class” to intimidate its enemies, especially the labor class. Of course, they couldn’t be trusted with bullets for their guns.

To get a better feel for the exhibits, take the virtual tour here.

You wind your way through the rooms of the museum in what was once the Savarin Palace. The exhibits feature authentic memorabilia, though “memorabilia” is such a trifling-sounding word that implies nostalgia, and the memories here are far from fond. The last portion on your way out (before the gift shop, Comrade Lenin) is devoted to a small viewing room that plays a short film in a loop describing Czech life from the Communist takeover to the Velvet Revolution in 1989. It was called the “Velvet” Revolution because shots weren’t fired, but that does not mean it was peaceful or that the history leading up to it wasn’t bloody.

I can remember, as a kid, watching the news in 1969 as the Soviet tanks rolled into Prague to crush the “Prague Spring” and any nascent hopes of reform within the Czech Communist Party. This, too, was depicted in the film and on the wall outside the viewing room: riots, beatings, tear-gassing, armed troops and war-machines rolling over the cobblestones of Wenceslas Square that we’d come to know so well, plain-clothes agents in the crowd tackling and kicking protesters, plus accounts of three students who self-immolated in protest against Communist control.Despite the incessant cradle-to-grave indoctrination, propagandizing, intimidation and spying, the Communists couldn’t stamp out hope and a desire for freedom from such a dehumanizing existence.

Communist doctrine often referred to the “inevitability of history” and Communism’s ultimate victory, yet by the 1980s, history was clearly turning against Communism as Poland, Hungary and East Germany shook off the shackles of totalitarianism. Even so, Czechoslovakia’s escape was not a done deal. The first protest drew maybe 10,000 to Wenceslas; as the week went on the numbers grew, until finally 500,000 were crowding in every night to apply pressure and turn the tables of intimidation as they watched their one-time rulers caving in. (Velvet Revolution timeline and summary here).  Blood was still being spilled; certain claws do not release easily, after all. The film ends with a bittersweet poem and images describing how much sweeter survival is after all the bitter pain that preceded it.

As I said, it is very affecting. As we left, I stopped at the desk of the woman who had sold us our tickets. She was about my age, and would have seen 1969 and 1989, and spoke very good English. She was standing, and turned to me. “Thank you,” I said, and she responded with a small, polite smile. “And thank you to people of Prague,” I added, and received a slow, solemn nod.

  18. Finding the B?st Mattress Singapore H?s t? Offer – What ?ost Buyers Mi?s

W?en it come? too Singapore furniture purchases,
f?w decisions feel ?s personal o? important as selecting the
rig?t mattress shop. ?he pressure ?s real —
?ou test fo? se?onds ?n the furnbiture showroom, ?ut live wit? th? result f?r ?ears.

?he Somnuz range fr?m Megafurniture ?as designed ?pecifically t? make this decision clearer f?r
Singapore buyers ?y covering the four main construction types m?st local families compare.

In Singapore, ?everal local factors m?ke mattress singapore selection m??e im?ortant
t?an in oth?r countries. ?he constant tropical humidity m?ans poor airflow
can ?uickly lead to musty smells ?r mould concerns.
Dust-mite sensitivity ?s far more common her? t?an most people realise.
?he widespread ?se ?f aircon at night can make
certa?n foam types feel firmer ?r le?s comfortable th?n they did und?r bright furniture store lights.

W?en ?ou walk into any furniture store in Singapore, ??u’ll ma?nly se?
four core mattress construction types worth comparing. Pocketed-spring mattresses
?se individually wrapped coils t?at mo?e independently, offering excellent motion isolation f?r couples and gener?lly ?etter
airflow. Pure memory foam delivers excellent body contouring, ?et
many Singapore buyers now prefer versions ?ith adde? cooling technology.
Latex iis naturally bouncier, sleeps cooler, ?nd resists
dust mites ?etter t?an most foams — a genuine advantage
?n our climate. Hybrid constructions combine pocketed springs ?ith foam ?r
latex comfort layers to deliver t?e best ?f both worlds.

Megafurniture’? Somnuz collection conveniently represents t??
main construction types m??t local families ?onsider.
Firmness levels are talked ?bout ?onstantly, b?t w?at feels firm to one person can feel medium ?r soft to anothe?.

    S?de sleepers generally benefit f?om medium-soft t? medium firmness f?r
proper spinal alignment. ?ack sleepers tend to prefer medium t? medium-firm f?r good lumbar
support ?ithout flattening the natural curve. Stomach sleepers ne?d firmer support ?o the
lower ?ack doesn’t collapse ?nto t?? surface.

HDB ?nd condo bedrooms in Singapore ?re typically smaller, making correct sizing essential ?ather th?n just
chasing the biggest option. Cover fabric choice matters m??e in Singapore than m??t buyers initially think.
Models ?ith bamboo fabric covers stay noticeably drier ?nd fresher ?n humid Singapore bedrooms.
Water-repellent finishes ?n certain Somnuz mattresses ad? practical protection ?gainst
    accidental spills andd ?igh humidity.

H?r?’? ho? t?e Somnuz mattresses ?ine u? with real household requirements ?n Singapore.

    ?he Somnuz Comfy serves as t?e practical entry-level choice — ? solid 10-inch pocketed-spring mattress ideal f?r
couples or single sleepers ??? want reliable support ?ithout premium
pricing. ?f y?u want bette? cooling ?nd allergen resistance, t?e Somnuz
Comforto ?ith ?ts bamboo-latex combination ?s often th? smarter pick.
Households that neded spilkl and humidity protection ?sually lean toward the
Somnuz Comfort Night model. Premium buyers ?ften choose t?e Somnuz Roman Supreme f?r superior materials ?nd l?ng-term
    comfort.

?he traditional ninet?-se?ond showroom test most people do is almost useless f?r m?king a goo? decision. To ?et ?seful feedback, spend
at lea?t ten minutes ?n ?ach model in the exact position you
no?mally sleep in. B?th Megafurniture showrooms l?t you test t?? Somnuz mattresses properly ?n proper
bedroom environments ?ather than on a bare sales floor.

Delivery scheduling ?s mor? important th?n many buyers realise ?hen buying mattress store items.
?sk ?bout old mattress removal ?nd study the warranty details before y?u sign.

Treat the decision ?eriously and a well-chosen mattress singapore ?ill deliver y?ars of comfortable sleep ?ith minim?l issues.
Ignoring e?rly warning signs ?sually means ?ou end
    up sleeping on ? worn-o?t mattress f?r longe? th?n ??u shoul?.
?hether ?o? prefer to shop in person at t?eir showrooms
or online, Megafurniture m?kes choosing the r?ght mattress singapore option simple
    ?nd transparent.

  19. Mattress Shopping ?n Singapore: ?h? Step-by-Step Guide
    ?ost People ?ish The? Had

Wh?n ?t ?omes to furniture singapore purchases,
f?w decisions feel ?? personal ?r ?mportant as selecting th? r?ght mattress.
T?e pressure is real — ??u test for se?onds in the furniture store, but
live ?ith th? result fo? years. The Somnuz range
fr?m Megafurniture was designed spec?fically to m?ke this decision clearer f?r Singapore buyers
?y covering the four main construction types m??t
    local families compare.

?igh humidity, dust mites, ?nd overnight air-conditioning ??e al?
affect ?ow ? mattress performs ?ver time.
Singapore’s y?ar-round humidity puts extra pressure
?n moisture management ?nside any mattress singapore.
? larg? numb?r of Singapore families deal with dust-mite reactions, ?ven if t?ey haven’t connected
t?e dots to their mattress. Overnight air-conditioning ?se
also ?hanges how ?ifferent foams and covers behave compared
    ?ith showroom testing.

?hen y?u walk into ?ny furniture showroom in Singapore, ??u’ll m?inly see four core
    mattress construction types worth comparing.
Individual pocketed spring systems ?ive ?ood support ?nd stay noticeably cooler than solid
foam blocks. Memory foam ?s loved f?r ?ts hugging feel and motion isolation,
t?ough traditional versions sometim?s retain warmth ?n Singapore bedrooms.
Natural latex options feel lively ?nd stay cooler ?hile
being more resistant t? dust mites th?n standard foam.

Hybrid constructions combine pocketed springs ?ith foam or latex comfort layers t? deliver the best ?f both worlds.

?t Megafurniture ?ou can test t?e full Somnuz line — from basic pocketed spring t?
advanced water-repellent ?nd latex hybrids — al? in their furniture store.
Choosing t?e right firmness level is f?r m??e personal than most mattress singapore
shoppers expect. ?f ?o? sleep on your s??e, a medium t? medium-soft mattress singapore helps relieve pressure ?t
the shoulder ?nd hip. B?ck sleepers ?ften feel most comfortable on medium to medium-firm surfaces t?at support the lower ?ack properly.
Stomach sleepers ?hould lean toward firmer options t? prevent the hips fropm sinking t?o
    far.

Because most Singapore homes have tighter bedroom
dimensions, choosing t?e right mattress size prevents th? r?om from feeling cramped.
The top layer ?f any mattress singapore plays ? bigger role in local conditions t??n many people realise.

Bamboo covers ?sed ?n ?ome Somnuz models provide superior breathability ?nd ?elp reduce musty build-?p over time.
Water-repellent finishes ?n certain Somnuz mattresses ?dd practical protection ?gainst accidental spills ?nd
    h?gh humidity.

He?e’s how th? Somnuz mattresses ?ine u? with real household requirements ?n Singapore.
Somnuz Comfy ?s the go-to budget-friendly option for many
Singapore furniture shoppers ?ooking f?r dependable pocketed spring support.
Somnuz Comforto appeals t? hot sleepers and allergy-sensitive households t?anks to its breathable bamboo cover and latex layer.

Households t?at nee? spill and humidity protection ?sually lean t?ward the Somnuz Comfort
Night model. ?he t?p-tier Somnuz Roman Supreme delivers premium
support ?nd luxury feel f?r buyers w?lling to invest ?n the ?ighest
    comfort level.

??e traditional ninet?-sec?nd showroom test m?st people do
is ?lmost useless for mak?ng ? good decision. Lie on eac? shortlisted
mattress f?r a fu?l ten minut?s in y?ur actual sleeping position — ?nd hav? your partner ?o th? sam? if you share
the bed. Megafurniture’? flagship furniture showroom at 134 Joo Seng Road
?nd the Giant Tampines outlet bot? display t?? f?ll Somnuz range in realistic
bedroom settings, m?king extended testing m?ch easier.

Delivery scheduling ?? more imp?rtant than many buyers realise ?hen buying mattress singapore items.
?sk ab?ut old mattress removal and study the warranty details ?efore you sign.

    ? quality mattress singapore sh?uld comfortably l?st
8–10 years in Singapore conditions ?hen chosen and maintained
properly. Watch f?r gradual signs ?ike new ?ack pain,
centre sagging, or partner disturbance —
these a?? clear signals th? mattress h?s reached the end of its
usefu? life. Visit Megafurniture’? furniture showroom o? browse t?eir
fu?l mattress singapore collection online t? find tthe Somnuz model t?at matches your need? and budget.
